006 World’s climate

世界せかい の 気候きこう

世界せかい　の　気候きこう　は、６つ　に　わかれます。
The world’s climate is divided into six different zones:

  1. 熱帯ねったい  Tropics [ tropical zone ]
  2. 温帯おんたい  Temperate zone
  3. 乾燥帯かんそうたい  Arid zone
  4. 冷帯れいたい（亜寒帯あかんたい）Subarctic zone
  5. 寒帯かんたい  Polar zone (arctic zone)
  6. 高山こうざん気候きこう  Alpine climate (alpine zone）　です。

1.熱帯ねったい Tropics　[tropical zone]

赤道せきどう の まわり　で、１年ねん を 通とおし　て 気温きおん の 高たかい 地域ちいき を　（　熱帯ねったい　）　と いいます。
A region around the equator with high temperatures throughout the year is called the “tropical zone”.

この 地域ちいき に ある 森林しんりん　を　（　熱帯ねったい雨林うりん　　）　と いいます。
The forests in this area are called “tropical rainforests”.

熱帯ねったい　で、乾季かんき と 雨季うき が あり、草原そうげん が ひろがる 地域ちいき を　（　サバナ　）　と いいます。
The area in tropical zone which has dry and rainy seasons and has a lot of grasslands is called ‘savanna.’

2.温帯おんたい Temperate zone

日本にほん　の ように、四季しき　が ある 地域ちいき を　（　温帯おんたい　　）　と いいます。
A region with four seasons like Japan is called a “temperate zone”.

➊　ユーラシア　大陸たいりく　の　東側ひがしがわ　では、（　季節風きせつふう（モンスーン））が　ふき　ます。
In the eastern part of the Eurasian continent, “monsoon winds” blow.
夏なつ の 気温きおん は 高たかく、冬ふゆ の 気温きおん は 低ひくく なります。また、１年ねん を 通とおし て 雨あめ が 多おおく 降ふります。
Summer temperatures are high, and winter temperatures are low with heavy rainfall throughout the year.

➋　ユーラシア　大陸たいりく　の　西側にしがわ では、　（　　偏西風へんせいふう　　）が　ふき　ます。
In the western part of the Eurasian continent, “westerly winds” blow, bringing warm air from the sea.
この　風かぜ　は　海うみ から 暖あたたかい 空気くうき を はこん　で きます。そのため、ヨーロッパ は、緯度いど が 高たかく て も 暖あたたかく なります。
Hence, Europe is warm even at high latitudes.

➌　イタリア など の　（　　地中海ちちゅうかい　　）　沿岸えんがん　の　 地域ちいき では、夏なつ は 気温きおん が 高たかく、雨あめ は 少すくない です。そして、冬ふゆ は温あたたかく、雨あめが 降ふります。
Coastal regions along the “Mediterranean Sea” like Italy have hot summers with less rain, and warm winters with rainfall.

3.乾燥帯かんそうたい Arid zone

１年ねん を 通とおし て 雨あめ が 少すくない 地域ちいき を　（　乾燥帯かんそうたい　） と いいます。
A region with little rainfall throughout the year is called the “arid” zone.
乾燥帯かんそうたい の 多おおく は 内陸部ないりくぶ に あります。
Most of the arid zones are located inland.

さばく　の まわり に ある、雨あめ が 少すくない 草原そうげん を　（　　ステップ　　）　と いいます。
Grasslands with little rainfall around deserts are called “steppes“.

4.冷帯れいたい（亜寒帯あかんたい）Subarctic zone

夏なつ は 気温きおん が 高たかく、冬ふゆ の 寒さむさ が　きびしい 地域ちいき を　（　冷帯れいたい（亜寒帯あかんたい）　）　と いいます。
A region with hot summers and harsh winters is called a ‘subarctic zone’ (or ‘cold temperate zone’ in Japanese).

ユーラシア　大陸たいりく の 北部ほくぶ、北きたアメリカ　大陸たいりく の 北部ほくぶ、そして　（　北海道ほっかいどう　）の 気候きこう は 冷帯れいたい です。
The northern parts of Eurasia, North America, and “Hokkaido” have a subarctic climate.

*” Subarctic zone” refers to “亜寒帯”. But “冷帯” is often used. The word “冷” means “cold”.

5.寒帯かんたい Polar zone (arctic zone)

北極ほっきょく海かい の 周まわり や 南極なんきょく大陸たいりく の ように、１年ねん を 通とおして 気温きおん が 低ひくい 地域ちいきを　（　寒帯かんたい　　）と いいます。
A region with low temperatures throughout the year, like around the Arctic Ocean and Antarctica, is called the “polar zone”.

寒帯かんたい [北極地方ほっきょくちほう]で、夏なつ は 地表ちひょう の 氷こおり が とけ て、こけ類るい が 生はえる 地域ちいきを　（　ツンドラ　）　と いいます。
In the Arctic regions, a region where surface ice melts in summer and moss grows is called “tundra”.

6.高山こうざん気候きこう Alpine climate (alpine zone）

標高ひょうこう が 高たかく なる と 気温きおん は 低ひくく なります。
As elevation increases, temperatures drop.

このような 気候きこう を　（　高山こうざん 気候きこう　　）と いいます。
This type of climate is called the “alpine” climate.
